Frequently asked questions

Short answers about saving video and audio, and what to do when YouTube pushes back.

How does YDL work?

Paste a YouTube link, pick a quality, and the file is saved straight to your device. Everything happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and nothing is kept on a server.

Do I need an account or an app?

No. There is no sign-up, no login, no extension and nothing to install. Open the site and paste a link.

What can I download?

Whatever YouTube offers for that video: MP4 video, audio-only tracks, or the whole thing in one file. Higher resolutions usually arrive as separate video and audio, which YDL combines for you. Whole playlists work too - pick the items you want.

Why does a download sit on "Merging"?

High-resolution downloads come as two files that have to be joined on your device. That uses your processor and takes a while for large videos. Keep the tab open until it finishes; on older phones, a lower quality or the combined format is much quicker.

What happens if I reload or close the tab?

Your queue is saved in the browser. After a reload, unfinished downloads carry on from where they stopped and finished files stay in the list until you delete them.

Why is the download slower than my connection?

Each file is fetched in a few parallel pieces. The default is deliberately modest so YouTube does not treat the session as abuse; you can raise it in Settings. Browsers also slow down background tabs, so bring the tab back if a download looks stuck.

YouTube asks me to sign in or says I am a bot

YouTube limits anonymous traffic by address, and shared or VPN connections hit that limit fastest. YDL slows itself down when it happens. You can paste cookies from a signed-in YouTube session in Settings to get past it; they stay in your browser and are only sent to YouTube. Treat them like a password and clear them afterwards.

Is anything stored about me?

No. Your queue, settings and any optional cookies live in your browser, not on a server. Clearing site data removes all of it. See the privacy policy for details.
